Perfection is not the art of knowing everything so well that you never make a mistake again…. Perfection is...

JM Battlestudies / Review

So unlike many other avid music fans out there I actually am a fan of John Mayer the musician. I can go either way on his personal exploits and tabloid frenzies, but to be honest why does that really matter? Being a musician I respect the culture of music and what it stands for and sometimes it can come in the form of someone so humble and earnest or it can come in the form of someone so outrageous and flamboyant
– which ever one I try to maintain focus on what they are bringing to the table and stay out of the media head as much as possible.
So on to BattleStudies , John Mayer’s 4th studio album which was release this past November. Well what can I say its different…. and definitely has a more laid back vibe to it..and well its different. Moving from the last album Continuum this album really sits with me as more or less background music that you can really chill out to without paying so much attention to it…if that makes sense. In other words this album seems to take focus off of being John Mayer and just sits with being John Mayer that kat who lives next door to you, or the guy you played pool with down in the village last Saturday, and so on. When I put it on I was in the middle of cleaning up my pad and ironically didn’t find myself paying so much attention to it, its as if my ego and sense of musician was on autopilot and it was just doing what needed to be done at the moment. I didn’t even realize when the disc was done playing…Lol not sure if that’s a good thing or not. Overall I dug it I like the approach in sounds used on it, though I was looking for a tad bit more – sometimes simplicity in itself is more than what is needed. One of my favorite tracks is Assassin for the simple reason that it’s not recognizable as a John Mayer tune to me – its something I would expect to hear on the radio and then following behind a different artists name. All and all the record is I think what he wanted it to be and no matter what the opinion is, that’s really all that counts.
